This event will provide an environment for fellow Nigerians and friends to either learn or brush up on one of Nigeria's main languages, Igbo. Professor Amarachi Attamah-Ugwu of Harvard University will teach students the basics of this indigenous Nigerian language, while discussing the rich history and cultural context embedded in its everyday phrases. This event will place a special emphasis on the naming conventions as well as the wide array of culture-specific greetings that exist in the Igbo language. She will then encourage students to employ her teachings through various interactive activities.. . . . While learning and practicing these languages, students will enjoy authentic Nigerian food, good company, and music. This also serves as the Nigerian Student Association's fourth event for the 2025 spring semester, providing an opportunity to continue to make meaningful connections for all students.. . . . This event is necessary for providing Nigerian students a space to engage with their linguistic heritage. Igbo -- the native language of many diasporic Nigerian students -- is not currently taught at Princeton. However, students of this background still deserve access to immersion and engagement with the Igbo language -- with the help of an academic proficient in this language. Our hope is that this language intensive will be the first of many, and that this will serve as a sign to the wider Princeton community of the importance of engaging and conserving indigenous African languages. This event will also serve as an opportunity for those outside of the Nigerian community to learn more about the Nigerian identity, expanding their horizons and connecting with the culture in a meaningful and impactful way.
