Diaspora in Dialogue: Reckoning with Generational Trauma

Nov 20
5:30PM to 7:00PM
Julis Romo Rabinowitz Building, room 399, Princeton, NJ 08544, United States
Trauma is often a stigmatized yet inevitable burden in the diaspora. As our countries move on from their histories of colonialism, civil conflict, and subjugation, we carry these histories in our minds and pass on their weight to the generations that succeed us. Often, reconciliation and healing in the diaspora centers on the economic and physical impacts of violence while neglecting mental health care. Hence, as part of our 2025-26 PIIRS Undergraduate Fellowship Initiative, this event will address this stigma head-on by centering the treatment of colonial trauma and its lasting psychological effects on younger generations in the African diaspora. Through a conversational discussion between Dr. Yacob Tekie and Dr. Uche Ukuku, as well as an interactive workshop meant to navigate practical strategies that can reinforce our mental health, we hope to enhance our understanding of trauma and help destigmatize mental health care in the diaspora, thereby equipping our attendees with concrete strategies to invest in their well-being. This even is open to all. Registration is required. Reckoning with Generational Trauma is organized by PIIRS Undergraduate Resarch fellows Ava Adelaja '27, Fikir Beyene' '27 and Mariah Morgan '27. --- Event Details: https://my.princeton.edu/rsvp?id=1968091
