Mpala Research Centre
30 Years of Research & Teaching
Mpala Research Centre (MRC) is one of the world’s leading field-based research centers located on a breathtaking 48,000-acre campus in Laikipia County, Kenya. As a Kenyan-U.S. collaboration, with backing from some of the world’s most important research organizations, Mpala is distinctively situated to lead research on topics of global importance including conservation, climate change, biodiversity, genomics, ecology, agriculture, human-wildlife interactions, and public health.
In 2015, Princeton University became the managing partner of the MRC, a registered Kenyon non-governmental organization founded in 1994. MRC is a collaboration between Princeton University and four governmental organizations: the U.S. Smithsonian Institution, National Museums of Kenya, the Kenya Wildlife Service, and the Kenyan Wildlife Research and Training Institute.
Mpala hosts scholars from over 50 global institutions and has substantial scientific infrastructure, including one of the few field-based genomics laboratories in sub-Saharan Africa. Princeton also controls the Mpala Wildlife Foundation (MWF), which is the U.S.-based nonprofit that stewards the land on which MRC is located.
