The Wildlife Interventions program at Mpala provides medical care to injured wildlife, collaborating closely with the Kenya Wildlife Service. The program's efforts focus on treating animals hurt by poachers or natural mishaps within the savannah ecosystem
Community Outreach at Mpala
Mpala boasts of several community outreach projects that connect the research center with the local communities across the region. Below are some of our current outreach projects.
The Eradicating Rabies project through the Rabies Vaccination Campaign is Mpala’s effort to reduce rabies in Kenya, focusing on vaccinating domestic dogs, the primary carriers.
The Mpala Graduate Student Scholarship Program is a transformative initiative that empowers African students to pursue higher education and conduct cutting-edge research at Mpala.
Run for Daraja
In 2023, Mpala staff joined the Race for Daraja. This event is a 15km charity race benefiting Daraja Academy in Kenya. This virtual race takes place throughout the month of May; participants can run, walk, cycle, or swim from anywhere in the world.
Providing Water Access
For many years, Mpala has been supporting our neighboring communities with water using our water tank truck. Water access has been a challenge for the local communities. In 2024, Mpala funded the drilling of a borehole in Lekiji, a neighboring community.
Community Visits
Mpala encourages visiting students and researchers to also visit and engage the local communities to learn about their cultures and conservation efforts and how they coexist with wildlife.
School Exposure Trips
This initiative targets the local schools by supporting students to visit Mpala and learn more about the science that is going on here as well as inspire them to pursue science in the future.
The George Small Scholarship Fund
Administered by Mpala, the George Small Foundation provides five annual scholarships to disadvantaged students. Three students are supported through high school while two others receive support for a vocational course at a technical college.
School Feeding Program
In 2023, a severe drought in Laikipia affected local communities especially schools. Mpala initiated a feeding program for two schools, Il Motiok and Lekiji, supporting over 700 students for three months and aiding those taking final exams.
