Mar 27
12:30PM to 2:00PM
Scheide Caldwell House, Room 103, Princeton, NJ 08544, United States
This workshop examines textual and visual representations of the African community on the island of Crete from the late 19th century until the Turkish-Greek population exchange in the early 20th century. Drawing on travel narratives, postcards and photographs, it will explore how individuals of African descent, mainly from the city of Chania, were documented, represented and remembered. Particular attention will be given to a 1907 photograph album held in Princeton University Library's Special Collections, a rare visual archive of the African presence on Crete. Respondent: Jacob S.
