Brazil LAB graduate fellow Vinicius Cardoso Reis appointed Visiting Researcher at the Institute for Health Policy Studies (IEPS)
Vinicius Cardoso Reis, a fifth-year graduate student in Anthropology and Brazil LAB graduate fellow, joined the Institute for Health Policy Studies (IEPS) as a visiting researcher this Fall term. IEPS is Brazil’s leading independent health policy organization, founded by economist Arminio Fraga *85 and directed by Dr. Miguel Lago, Visiting Lecturer in Anthropology and SPIA.
Vinicius’ work resides at the intersection of medical, political, and legal anthropology, with a specific focus on public health activism and state violence reparations. Since 2023, he has been following disputes arising from the activism of Covid-19 victims and their allies in Brazil, as they seek accountability and reparation for how public agents managed the pandemic.
At IEPS, Vinicius has been advancing in his dissertation manuscript and further studying the connections between Covid activism and pandemic preparedness debates in Brazil. While in Rio de Janeiro, he continues to follow his interlocutors in the weeks leading up to the general elections and to work on the collective research project “Rising Authoritarianisms and the Powers of Family Complexes Today”, led by Prof. João Biehl, Prof. Thomas Levin (GER), and Dr. Miguel Lago.
