Wildlife Filmmaking with an Anthropological Lens
Live with wildlife at the Mpala Research Centre and learn documentary filmmaking techniques with anthropology's distinctive lens. We critically study conventional tales and techniques of wildlife films, and their ecological hazards, and then bend them into anthropology. With a multispecies lens, we decenter familiar human-centered ways of seeing, knowing and communicating (e.g., with symbols) and focus on unexpected nonhuman forms of sentience, signification and sociality. Our aim is to create filmic openings to communication and exchanges with nature that are interventions into pressing issues of biodiversity and the climate crisis.

Human Rights Law in Culture and Practice
This course explores why human rights violations persist when so many have assented to them. Through case studies that focus on how human rights take shape in practice, we analyze complexities -- legal, political, economic, historical, and social -- that underpin human rights ideals and persistent atrocities. We explore marginalized populations and prominent institutions that mobilize human rights, even while powerful elites escape accountability. Along the way, we consider culture as a measure of human rights variation and how groups mobilize the concept of culture as critique of western hegemony or strategic disavowal of human rights.

Human Rights and Socio-Economic Rights: Perspectives on Justice and Development
This course explores the intersection of post-conflict justice and economic development. The first part of the course will delve into the theoretical and applied paradigms and debates, and the second part will seek to understand how transitional justice and human rights can be practically integrated with development issues and economic rights. The course is centered around an understanding of how projects of human flourishing and justice have balanced demands for economic stability and prosperity with demands for accountability and reconciliation.

A Gateway to Science: Observational Astronomy in the James Webb Era
Astronomy is in an amazing period of discovery. The Webb Space Telescope is enabling stunning discoveries about the formation of planets around other stars and first stars and galaxies. This course will open the curtain on astronomical discovery, examining astronomical telescopes and detectors, statistical methods, and astronomical computing. Students will also get a taste of what it means to be a professional astronomer by reading both popular and astronomical literature. Finally, as part of the final project, we will practice given public-level talks.

Junior Independent Work
Junior Independent Work (JIW) requires students to complete a substantial piece of research and scholarship under the supervision and advisement of a Princeton faculty member. The work requires sustained investment and attention throughout the semester. Only one JIW is required for the AST major, but two JIWs are allowed. Students planning to continue in graduate school are strongly advised and encouraged to complete two JIWs, AST 398 and AST 399, on the same or different topics.

Introduction to Robotics for Digital Fabrication
This course introduces students to industrial robotic arms and their application for digital fabrication and construction automation. This course utilizes Robot Operating System (ROS) and Python to plan, visualize, simulate, and control industrial robotic arms. ROS and Python are both widely used in robotics research and development. Prerequisite knowledge of ROS and Python is not required. By the end of this course, students will be able to utilize this platform to develop robotic processes for digital fabrication and will be familiar with state-of-the-art research on robotic fabrication and construction automation.
