Light-driven catalysis offers a promising pathway towards more sustainable chemical transformations due to milder process conditions and the potential to capitalize on sunlight as a scalable, carbon-free energy source. This course explores applications of such photocatalytic systems in important reactions and sectors - including CO2 upgrading, pharmaceuticals, and microplastic mitigation - covering fundamental concepts related to redox chemistry and thermodynamics, optoelectronic properties of photocatalytic materials, and photocatalyst/photoreactor design.

From the ubiquitous water bottle to food packaging to Barbie, we live in a plastic world. While plastics provide benefits from safe food delivery to sterile healthcare products, only a small percentage is recycled. This course addresses the historical development of plastics and their impacts. We'll discuss the science of plastics and their lifecycle from sourcing through manufacturing, use, and end-of-life. Topics will include microplastics, plastics in the ocean, and the impacts of additives (e.g. BPA). Finally, we'll examine solutions including recycling and bio-based plastics from scientific, behavioral, and economic perspectives.

Electrochemistry plays a central role in advancing a more environmentally sustainable economy. Therefore, understanding its fundamental aspects is pivotal for improving and developing technologies related to energy storage, environmental sustainability, and green chemistry. This course will focus on the development of electrochemical theories for electrochemical reactions and charge transport processes. Using statistical and continuum mechanics, along with equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics, we will develop theories to describe charge transport and transfer phenomena and design experimental protocols to probe them.

The senior thesis (498-499) is a year-long project in which students complete a substantial piece of research and scholarship under the supervision and advisement of a Princeton faculty member on an important problem or topic in chemical and biological engineering. Projects may be experimental, computational, or theoretical - topics selected by the students from suggestions by the faculty. While a year-long thesis is due in the student's final semester of study, the work requires sustained investment and attention throughout the academic year.

Major advances in computational methods from first-principles simulations to AI have ushered in a new age of materials science where the vastness of chemical space can potentially be explored with greater efficiency than ever before. In this course, we survey the major developments (and limitations) in computational materials design and discovery that have emerged since the start of the Materials Genome Initiative. Topics include but are not limited to: material informatics, material property databases, machine-learned potentials, and generative AI. Programming exercises and literature discussions will reinforce the concepts covered in class.

The Chemical & Biological Engineering sequence provides sophomore students with a research experience. The sequence comprises two semesters with CBE 298 (Fall) as a prerequisite for CBE 299 (Spring), a credit bearing P/D/F course. Students will gain an introduction to research in Chemical & Biological Engineering with a CBE faculty mentor. Students are expected to spend 6 hours per week engaged with research and attend weekly meetings as outlined by the mentoring faculty. Students will develop the language and confidence to present technical data to a scientific community.

When something seems to defy our understanding of how the world works, we would call it magical. Throughout human history, development of new materials was associated with magic because it made things that were formerly impossible or incomprehensible possible. The durability of a steel tool must have seemed magical for the bronze age worker. The Internet, instant access to all information of humankind at the touch of a button would have been incomprehensible a hundred years ago. This class will talk about the magic materials people encountered throughout history, what equates to magic materials today and how might they shape our future.

Biologists use a variety of statistical approaches to draw robust conclusions from noisy real-world data. This course covers the fundamental ideas behind these approaches, as well as the tools needed to apply them in practice, using the programming language R. We will discuss methods for describing and visualizing data, quantifying uncertainty, and distinguishing meaningful effects from random noise. A major goal of the course is to prepare students for analyzing their own data.
