Elementary Sanskrit I
An introduction to classical Sanskrit grammar and vocabulary, as well as Devanagari script, pronunciation, and phonological change (sandhi). Students will begin to read simple Sanskrit prose and verse.

Elementary Sanskrit II
Continuing from SAN 101, this course provides a firm foundation in Classical Sanskrit grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. Students continue learning the rules for phonological change (sandhi), and other building blocks of Sanskrit grammar. Students will read Sanskrit texts of increasing difficulty, acquire the skill of recitation of Sanskrit poetry in several meters, and learn to compose small but cohesive narratives of medium difficulty in Sanskrit. By the end of the year, students will be ready to read independent texts in a variety of genres, using Sanskrit-English dictionaries and grammars. SAN 102 must be taken to receive credit for 101.

Intermediate Sanskrit I
Strengthens classical Sanskrit grammar and vocabulary and builds knowledge of South Asian religion and culture through reading selections from Sanskrit Epids and Puranas.

Intermediate Sanskrit II
Strengthens Classical Sanskrit grammar and vocabulary and builds knowledge of South Asian religion and culture through reading selections from Sanskrit epics, narrative, pre-philosophical, didactic, and poetic texts. Together with SAN 105 this course provides students an introduction to the major genres of Sanskrit literature. Requires Sanskrit 105 or permission of the instructor.

Advanced Sanskrit: Vedic Language, Grammar, and Literature
This course builds upon the foundation in Classical Sanskrit grammar and vocabulary established during first and second year Sanskrit, and builds knowledge of Vedic grammar, language, and style through reading selections from the Vedic texts in poetry and prose. The course is primarily a reading course, focusing on passages from the Rigveda, Atharvaveda, early Brahmanas, and Upanishads. This course provides students a comprehensive introduction to the Vedic literature and language.

Advanced Poetic Sanskrit
This course builds on the foundation in Classical Sanskrit grammar and vocabulary learned in first and second year Sanskrit, and also builds knowledge of Sanskrit poetry and South Asian culture through reading selections from Sanskrit poetic works and traditional theoretical treatises on poetics. The course is primarily a reading course, focusing on passages from poems by classical poets in combination with other readings. Part of the course is dedicated to the language and style of the Vedic poetry. This course provides students a comprehensive introduction to the Sanskrit poetic literature of different periods.

Advanced Philosophical Sanskrit
This course introduces philosophical and intellectual tradition of Classical India through readings selected from Sanskrit texts belonging to different branches of Indian thought. This is primarily a reading course. It covers a wide range of passages excerpted from major works of various schools of Indian philosophy and pre-philosophical reflections. Sanskrit texts are supplemented by a selection of secondary literature to help students situate the works in the intellectual and cultural context of pre-modern South Asia.
